Helping needy children
We run several programs to help orphans and vulnerable children, their guardians, and the youth.
Our work is making a difference: Our projects directly reach more than 500 orphans and over 100 grandmothers and mothers. We provide:
Nutritional support
We provide nutrition support 196 to orphan and vulnerable children in grandmother-headed homes and to babies born from HIV-positive mothers. We have an agreement with Kabwata Health Centre to provide food supplements to children under 5 and nutritional education to their mothers.
“I was very sick and was told to wean my baby Taonga, who was only 7 months and weighed 3kgs. She had TB. But Kabwata Clinic referred me to Heart of Mercy who provided food supplements. Now my baby is health, strong and walking.”
- Amake Taonga
Educational support
We are offering educational support orphans and vulnerable children in grandmother-headed homes. We are currently offering education to support to 101 primary children and 21 secondary school pupils. We provide textbooks, uniforms and food to Kapete Community School for OVCs in Chongwe.
Secondary School scholarships
We provide scholarships to orphans and vulnerable children that have qualified to be in school but are not in school.
“When I qualified to go to grade 8, I had no money to pay for my school fees. Heart of Mercy started to sponsor me. Am now in grade 12.”
- Prosper Mwenya
Support groups
We established support groups in Ndola and Chongwe for grandmothers raising their orphaned grandchildren. The groups meet for fundrasing, farming and income-generating activities as a community to ensure food security at every grandmother-household level.
We have established a support group called Save a Baby Project for HIV-positive mothers in Lusaka in an effort to help mothers learn how to avoid transmitting the virus to their babies. We also train mothers in nutrition to enhance nutrition in babies, most of whom are weaned from breast milk at six months
Child fostering and adoption
We facilitate child adoption and fostering in collaboration with the Ministry of Community and Development. We place the abandoned babies and orphans in orphanages until adoption is complete.
"When my sister died she left a two-months-old baby. Somebody told us about the child fostering and adoption programme at Heat of Mercy we decided to bring the baby to Heart of Mercy. Baby Ruth was taken to House of Moses Orphanage and discharged when she was two months old. Ruth is 3 years old and back with us. We are grateful to Heart of Mercy who have continued to provide food supplements."
